Saturdays with Fray Villalobos
By: Dean Alfar
SUMMARY OF THE STORY
The story revolves around Monja Barraquias and Fray Villalobos and their Saturday trips. They visited the homes of Indios in the country of Hinirang wherein they would evangelize pagan natives. For Fray, the Saturday trips they had were not just about preaching. He would always pack ingredients to bring to the Indios' houses. On each trip he would prepare different meals and Monja would take not of each one of those dishes. the meals he prepared was taught to him by the natives there and they had specific ways in preparing the dishes, and Fray had learned them all.
On one night of their trip something had come up, and Indio priest had challenged Fray Villalobos to a "duel of faiths". Monja was unsure of what might happen so he pleaded Fray to back down from the duel, but he kept on insisting that something must be done. He ordered Monja to leave and just pray for him, but she didn't want to leave him alone. As the priest began to walk towards them, Monja started to shout that they should be left alone. The fight ended with Fray Villalobos dead and the priest telling Monja Barraquias to leave and to stop the evangelization.
Monja Barriaquias didn't listen to the Indio priest; instead she continued the work Fray Villalobos left. Where they would cook and eat with the native Indios. With what had happened, Monja was left angry which lead her to kill the Indio priest that killed Fray Villalobos as revenge. The last dish she made was Dinuguan.
