Courage, power, spirituality and God. Courage because the friars want to convert the Indios into Catholics. Power because the search for Catholicism and they are willing to exchange their life just to spread Catholicism to the Indios. Spirituality because some of the Indios before don’t believe in God and they only worship and believe in animism. God because the Spanish want to spread Catholicism to the Indios.
The story's point of view is from the first person point of view. The narrator is depicted as a character in the story as "Monja Barraquias." The narrator is a female and she goes to different towns with the protagonist, "Fray Villalobos.
The diction used in the story is a language that is used in the mid spanish era when the spanish colonizers were here in the Philippines. The language consists of deep English and Filipino terms. It uses various extinct Filipino words as well.
